The Heart Of Thanksgiving

Family is the most important thing in the world -Mae Everdeen

To one culture of people thanksgiving is a holiday that we celebrate with joy and feasts, but to another it’s a day of grief and sorrow. Thanksgiving is a holiday that the pilgrims created to celebrate the food and what they called ‘friendship’ with the Native Americans. But to the Native Americans it is the start death and grief.

Every year my family will reread and relearn both sides of the story of thanksgiving. But to me that has never really been what thanksgiving is to me. To me thanksgiving is a day that I get to eat ham, spend time with my family, and be extra grateful.

Yes I said ham, not turkey. I don’t really like turkey, and my grandma (on my moms side) knows. So every year she would cook ham for me instead of turkey. My mom would always make the rolls. They were always so amazing. And then there were the mashed potatoes, my grandma would make them but no one can beat my moms. The stuffing is really good to. The only time I ever have it though is at my grandparents, my mom never makes it. There is always other food to, but that’s all I really ate. 😁

I usually get three thanksgiving each year, my family on my dads side, my family on my moms side, and just me, my mom, my dad, and my brothers. I love hanging out with my family, so that why thanksgiving is probably one of my favorite holidays, along with Easter and Christmas.

There was this one thanksgiving at my aunts house (on my dads side). All kids were at the kids table (there was always two tables the adult and the kids. 😉) and we got the butter, it was a whole stick. By the time it got back to the adult table there was nothing left. An entire stick of butter was devoured by six kids. I have to say, I’m pretty sure it was mostly my little brother.

Here are a few things I’m thankful for this year in no specific order:

-Family -Puppies -Friends -Writing -Music -Sunshine -Laughter -Books -Fall -Baking -And so many other things.

Dear God, thank you for the wonderful year I have had so far. For all the new friends I have made. For my family. For the puppies that showed up in my yard in need of love and care. Thank you for being there as I start my life as a fourteen year old. Thank you for the world that has given me both joy and grief. But most of all thank you for being there as I go through the ups and downs of life.

And thank you, dear readers for starting this journey with me.
